“A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirits; recognizes your disabilities but emphasizes your possibilities.”
- William Arthur Ward
Rev. Walter McCleary, founder of "The Dufferin Association for Retarded Children," established the first school for children with developmental disabilities in 1954. Initially operating out of a library basement, this school laid the foundation for the growth of the Association and helped raise public awareness about the needs of children with developmental disabilities.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Association focused on expanding its services and solidifying its role as a comprehensive organization supporting both children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Over the past 70 years, Community Living Dufferin (CLD) has grown significantly, now offering a wide range of supports for adults living in the community. These services include the Supported Independent Living (SIL) program for those requiring minimal support, the Options Day Program focused on leisure and learning, clinical supports, and 13 residential group homes. One of these homes is a specialized resource for individuals with Prader-Willi Syndrome, and there is also a treatment program for individuals with complex special needs. CLD also oversees Passport funding and allocates services to promote community inclusion, as well as employment services that help individuals with developmental disabilities secure meaningful work.
As of 2024, CLD supports over 150 individuals, both residentially and in the community, and employs over 200 people, continuing to fulfill its vison for an inclusive community where all people are accepted, appreciated for their uniqueness, and treated equitably.
Gifts from donors like you provide opportunities for people we support to actively participate in their community.
